(Week 20) Tuesday, June 14th

(Week 20) Tuesday, June 14th

Dear Baby BOY Schade,
Today we went to the Provo hospital and had some pictures taken. I have to say you gave the ultrasound student quite the runaround. Just as she was about the freeze the frame for a shot they needed you would twist and turn and tuck and roll. Both nurses knew you were a boy before we even got the money shot. They said, “Boys are the only ones moving this much.” I agreed when the ultrasound tech called you a little turd, but must confess I can’t wait to see what that equates to once you are here in person. I cant say I am excited for tantrums and fits, but I am excited for all those wiggling and stretching fingers and toes.
You are famous by the way. Your Papa and I watched you on the T.V. for about 45 minutes and loved every minute of it. Best, most exciting feature I have seen on T.V. ever! We even got to see the lenses of your eyes, the shape of your nose, your little mouth. Most of the images were used for measurements. We saw your stomach, C spine, heart and a bunch of other blobs I had no idea what they were. The ultrasound techs couldn’t really tell us much about the things they were looking at, whether they were normal or not. The only thing we really got was that you are either growing very fast, or we have the due date wrong. Either way you are at about 22 weeks from what they say. That makes me kind of excited because maybe your birthday will be on Halloween! How cool would that be, baby?
Well, needless to say, I thought you looked beautiful and perfect, Papa couldn’t stop smiling the rest of the day. We were so excited to share the news and I was disappointed I had to go back to work before we could drive to Grandma and Grandpa’s house to share the surprise with them.
Papa and I sort of wanted to do something special to announce what you were, but we didn’t know what. So we drove to Partyland just to see what they had. They had a baby section full of "It's a Boy!" stuff. We looked and looked, but the blue gum cigars were too expensive. So instead we went over to Ridley's and found just random blue candy. An Airhead, Tropical Starburst, Almond Joy--you get the idea. Then Papa asked if we should put it in a bag. I said yes, because looking at his armload I knew we would need one. Then I said we should get a pink bag to throw everyone off. Papa’s eyes immediately lit up.
He said, "We should write 'It's a Girl!' on the outside of the bag, then put, 'with a boy inside!' on the inside of the bag with all the blue candy." I loved the idea. So we got our candy and ran back over to Partyland for a plain pink bag and tissue paper. With our loot we piled back into the car. We got to the house and Spen walked in before me. The whole family was sitting in the living room waiting.
I walked in behind him holding out the pink bag. The first thing I heard was, "Awwwwww no. Ich. Take that thing back out." It was your Uncle Lincoln, not at all happy to see a pink bag. So I handed him the present and he immediately set it on the couch next to him saying, "I don't want that. You got the wrong baby." I encouraged him to open it. Grandma was smiling, Grandpa was smiling, Auntie Kelsey was beaming, but no one really knew what exactly was going on yet. Hesitantly Uncle Linc started sifting though the tissue paper. He pulled out the blue booties. He said, "Now I'm confused." He pulled out some of the blue candy. I tugged at the bag so he could read what was inside. I could see the revelation dawning on him slowly. Grandma couldn't take it anymore. "What is it?"
"It's a girl!" Papa and I said together, "with a BOY inside."
Everyone laughed, especially me because Uncle Lincoln looked so relieved. The only people in the room who already knew were Spencer and I and Aunt Nana. We thought they would get the message immediately, but they didn't. We had to help them solve the riddle. I thought Uncle Linc wouldn't go for it in the first place, thinking we might pull something, but he was such a sucker. He will claim he was just kidding, and that he was just teasing about being disappointed with a girl, but we all know the truth. We got him! Grandma was actually working on a girl blanket despite her inklings it was a boy, and she was so happy to hear it really WAS a boy, after all the stuff she had already bought. Grandpa kind of wanted it to be a girl, but I am sure he will get his chance at a granddaughter sometime and he will love you so much. Auntie Kels was thrilled either way.
So there you have it, the story of how we told the world you were a boy. We are so excited and are anxious to hear what the doctor thinks of all those pictures.
Love you so very much baby boy,
                                    Love Mama
